“Fan Service” Series Review (Ep.1 to 6)

“Fan Service” doesn’t offer much more than what we can expect from a short miniseries. What got me invested in this show wasn’t the storyline, but the casting. If you are a fan of the Korean dating reality show “His Man”, then you might recognize the protagonists. The show stars Kim Chan Kyu alongside Kim Chang Min as main leads. Both were participants in the first season of “His Man.” From what I remember, they barely had any interaction on the show. So, I was intrigued by what kind of chemistry these two “His Man” contestants would bring to the show. Thankfully, they didn’t disappoint!!

The Storyline & Chemistry-

Hallyu star Geon Woo (Kim Chang Min) lives a difficult life. He is constantly stalked by his fans and suffers from a childhood trauma where his own father kidnapped him. The entertainment industry isn’t kind or forgiving either. He also has an estranged relationship with his younger brother, Taewoo (Yang Jaewoo). Tae Woo has been best friends with Jae Yeon (Kim Chan Kyu), since childhood. Both are very close, and Tae Woo has feelings for Jae Yeon.

Jae Yoon is a struggling student who makes money from producing online content. Fate takes an interesting turn when Geon Woo mistakes Jae Yeon for a stalker. To apologize for his mistake, Geon Woo’s manager accepts Jae Yeon’s request for an interview with Geon Woo. Initially unenthusiastic about the interview, Geon Woo & Jae Yeon slowly grow closer.

I kept wondering if Chang Min & Chan Kyu would have decent chemistry. After all, it had been four years since we saw them together and even on the reality show, they didn’t talk much. Surprisingly, Chan Kyu has a good camaraderie with Jaewoo as well, but the story isn’t about Jae Yeon & Tae Woo. It remains focused on Geon Woo finding true love in the midst of his life struggles. Both brothers also reconcile with their father and each other.

Final Impressions

The finale episode was slightly cringeworthy, but you can definitely dedicate an hour or so to this show!!

Chang Min & Chan Kyu have a fresh chemistry. I wasn’t even sure if either of them could actually act. Also, Yang Jaewoo has a strong screen presence. We know Tae Woo won’t end up with Jae Yeon and yet you can’t help but cheer for him. Frankly, there isn’t much to talk about the show, because of the short timeframe. Enjoy it when you have nothing else to watch!
