“When Light Fades” Series Review (Ep.1 to 8)

This is a journey that is not just a battle for their ideals, but a story of a deep bond slowly forging under the starlight!!

Historical context is very important because people living outside Thailand might be unfamiliar with the “6 October 1976 massacre”. So, we will briefly touch on this sensitive topic before moving ahead with the review, so our readers have an idea of what transpired in that era. The 6 October 1976 massacre, also known as the 6 October event (Thai: เหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา RTGS: het kan hok tula) in Thailand, was a violent crackdown by Thai police and lynching by right-wing paramilitaries and bystanders against leftist protesters who had occupied Thammasat University, on 6 October 1976. Prior to the massacre, thousands of leftists, including students, workers and others, had been holding ongoing demonstrations against the return of exiled former Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn to Thailand since mid-September. On 6th October, the police used war-grade weapons, including assault rifles, grenade launchers, anti-armor rounds and grenades, to wage a crackdown against the surrounded protesters who briefly tried to defend themselves but they were quickly defeated. Students began escaping to the jungles in Thailand and joined the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT) who set up bases and allowed these students to join them.

Storyline & Chemistry-

Early at dawn, October 6, 1976, amidst the roaring gunfire and explosions echoing across the university campus, Ravin (Lhongchang Atip) and his friends lost everything in the blink of an eye. Left with no choice, Ravin chose to abandon his comfortable life, and disregarding his mother’s desperate pleas, ventured deep into the dense jungle toward a land of shared ideology with his comrades. Within the dark and perilous wilderness, fate brought him face-to-face with Comrade Yue (Bas Asavapatr), a calm and cold-hearted young fighter who saved Ravin’s life from a deadly animal trap just in the nick of time. Their life in the jungle is a stark contrast to their comfortable life in the city & they have difficulties adjusting to the strict decorum in the base camp. But their resolve to change the future of their country, gives them the strength to acclimatize. Initially apprehensive of Ravin’s identity, Yue maintains a distance. But while training Ravin & going on missions together, they get closer & fall in love. Unfortunately, they are torn apart when Ravin learns that Yue was responsible for his corrupt father’s death.

Lhongchang Atip has an inexplicable presence. His portrayal of Ravin is refreshing yet restrained. Pushed out of his comfortable space, Ravin chooses to pursue a difficult path while taking shelter in the jungle. Despite having nightmares and trauma, he trains in warfare guerilla, because he strongly wishes for a change. Bas has an understated rendition, his Yue is calm and composed. The stark contrast between both characters gives rise to an intriguing chemistry!!

Final Impressions

The show doesn’t touch much on the historical context, so interfans are forced to watch this show, without learning about the backdrop!!

I wish the scriptwriters had given a brief interlude about the massacre, so the audience could understand the significance of the event which drove students to jungles. The show does a good job of portraying their shared ideologies and their intent, but too much context is lost in transition. For most parts, this show revolves around the budding romance between the main leads. It isn’t exactly disappointing, but the “6 October 1976 massacre” is relegated to the status of a backdrop instead of being treated like a major event.
